When I'm working on a text and want to see how a certain term or phrase in the source or target text is used throughout the translation - "Teilaufgabe" for instance:
I can select the text and use the keyboard shortcut
to automatically copy that text in quotes to the search box and filter:
If no text is selected and I use the keyboard shortcut, the cursor will move to the search box for the source or target text, depending on where it was. Click the red X filter icon to the right of the search boxes to show all segments again.
Useful indeed. Did you know that you can also use the Ctrl+Shift+F combo again after filtering on a text selection in order to remove the filter? It's the equivalent of clicking the red X filter icon but leaving your hands cosily on the keyboard. In case you missed it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Charles, I had not noticed the shortcut's use as a "clearing" function as well :-) That's useful.
DeleteWow, this is great, have been using it all day. Very useful addition by Lingosapiens, too.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. I've relied on this sort of filtering even before memoQ existed: it was one of my favorite featres in Déjà Vu. There the function could also be accessed via the context menu in the translation grid; I wish Kilgray would add this to memoQ's context menu there as well. (This probably won't happen unless users begin to pester Support with this "feature request"; when I suggested this, the response seemed to indicate that they expect everyone will discover the function by reading the keyboard shortcuts list. Ain't gonna happen in 99% of cases.)
DeleteI looked for a tooltip indicating the shortcut, and since there was no tooltip I concluded no shortcut existed. Glad to be proven wrong. I wonder how many users need to pester support for a feature request to be implemented. Things I suggest never seem to make it (regex in searches and filters, proper capitalization algorithm in predictive typing).
ReplyDeleteI was fortunate to notice this feature when I first started to use memoQ (version 3.5), because in the first hour I worked with the software, I redefined most of the keyboard shortcuts to match those in my main tool at the time (Déjà Vu - four years later I'm still using those custom shortcuts, so I often have no idea what the standard ones are when someone asks me). However, after a while I used this search feature less and forgot it for a while - even wondered if I had imagined using it - until a friend's question much later finally reminded me where it was to be found. I kept looking for it in the context menu where I had often found it in DVX when I forgot the shortcut, but alas....
DeleteI have also repeatedly requested regex in the segment filter field and in the search and replace dialog box, similar to what's in Microsoft Word. That would be awesome to have, and if it's not there in 2013 R2 I'll be disappointed. We're just about to upgrade a 60-user server installation from 6.2 to 2013 R2 in the coming weeks, so we have lots of new functionality to look forward to, but the icing on the cake would have been that regex filter.
